DIY Seasoning Mixes – In The Kitchen: Episode 46

Do you make your own seasoning mixes from scratch? If you think about how much pre made mixes are costing you, you may reconsider, and make your own. You can put together the following seasoning mixes in bulk and store in Mason jars, or spice tins.

Taco, Burger and Fajita Seasoning Mixes

These seasoning mixes are all ones I rarely buy in the stores premade. The reason I make them is because I like knowing all the ingredients I am putting in them, and it is more cost effective to make them from the ingredients I have on hand.

Seasoning mixes

Taco Seasoning Mix

This seasoning can be added to ground meat when making tacos, or taco dips, anywhere you would use the packaged taco seasoning.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp Chili Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
  • 1/2 tsp Oregano
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • 3 tsp Cumin
  • 2 tsp Sea Salt (optional, or to taste)
  • 2 tsp Pepper

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients and store in airtight container in cupboard.
  • You can make this recipe in bulk or use the measurements above to combine with 1 lb meat. (approximately equal to a packet in the store)

Fajita Seasoning Mix

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp Cornstarch
  • 2 tsp Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 3/4 tsp Chicken Bouillon Powder ** see note
  • 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients and store in airtight container in cupboard.
  • Use amount above with 2 chicken breast and chopped veggies, or fajitas to serve 3-4 people.
  • Combine seasoning in frypan, with meat, veggies and with 1/4 cup water and stir to thicken. 

Notes

** If you choose to not add the chicken bouillion powder, you can use chicken broth in place of the water, for added flavour.

Burger Seasoning Mix

This recipe is great to make in bulk and have on hand for making burgers. Simply use 2 Tbsp seasoning mix, 1 lb ground meat, 1 egg, and 1 Tbsp Worchestershire sauce. combine to make patties.

  • 2 Tbsp Parsley
  • 1 Tbsp Dry Mustard
  • 1/2 Tbsp Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients and store in airtight container in cupboard.
  • Use 2 Tbsp seasoning with 1 lb ground meat.
Italian, Greek and Poultry Seasoning

Italian Seasoning

  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Basil
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Oregano
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Parsley
  • 1 Tbsp Thyme
  • 1 Tbsp Rosemary
  • 1 Tbsp Sage
  • 1 Tbsp Onion Powder
  • 1 Tbsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 Tbsp Paprika
  • 1/2 Tbsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Pepper
  • 1 tsp Fennel Seed

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients well, and store in airtight container in cupboard.

Greek Seasoning
